River's Edge
リバース・エッジWhat will you do if you get the news that
you may see a dead person, on the earth,
out of your town, but not far away?
Go and see it, like the boys in Stand by Me?
This time, however, the dead girl is your school-friend, put to death by [her] boyfriend.
Other school-friends are going there
with HIM. Are you going with them?
River's Edge, made in 1987, is a
serious and shocking motion picture of
high-schoolers who are uncertain of
what is good and what is bad.

John, a strong high-school boy,
has put his girlfriend to death,
and says so to his friends at school.
They are not much shocked at the news,
but interested enough to go to a
side of the river and see the body.
They say that they will keep it secret.

Layne, the boy with an automobile,
says that John and the girl are
his friends, but the living one
is more important than the dead.
So Layne makes every attempt to
keep John safe.
Because Layne doesn't have much
belief in law-officers,
he takes John to a strange man
living out of the town
and makes a request that
the man will keep John there.
(The old man is played by Dennis Hopper.)
In addition to that, Layne puts
the dead girl into the river.

Among the unfeeling high-schoolers,
only two have their feelings troubled.
They are Clarissa and Matt.

The picure of the dead girl
comes back, over and over,
to Clarissa, who was her good friend.

Matt, played by Keanu Reeves,
has a trouble with his father-in-law [stepfather].
In addition to that,
he is deeply trouble with the
event at the river's edge.
When he makes up his mind to
give the news to the law-officer,
the policeman takes him as if
HE did the crime.

Matt has an angry burst
and gives a violent attack to
his young brother Tim,
because Tim has been doing
unkind things to the young sister.

Tim gets angry and makes up his mind
to get a gun and have a fight with Matt.
The twisted threads of the story go on.

The boys and girls in this moving picture
are tired of living, with little hope
for the future.
The story is roughly based on an
event which took place in California.
This movie might make you
see another side of some Americans.

Take note:
The body of the dead girl with no clothing on
is put to a view, complete with hair.
This movie is not for young boys and girls.
