The Death of Karen Silkwood
The Death of Karen Silkwood (Oxford Bookworms Library)

Great danger, sometimes,
comes near to our houses or at our workplaces,
but we may not see it.
Even when we go by the side of it every day,
we may not be conscious of it.
When we see the danger and
do something to make ourselves safe,
we might get greater danger.
One example of this troubling condition
is the true story
of an American woman named Karen Silkwood.

Karen was working at a factory in Oklahoma,
putting special substance into long, hollow, rods.
She was happy with the good payment and
warm-hearted friends there.
But after she became a representative for the
organization of workers there,
she came to see, by and by,
the secret of the company.

She got in touch with a newspaper writer in Washington, D.C.,
but after a number of troubles,
and before giving him details,
she suddenly went dead.
The automobile she was driving at night
went off the road,
crushing to a nearby wall.
The true cause of her sudden death, however,
has been unclear.

Her story was made into the 1983 motion picture
starring Ms. Merryl Streep as Silkwood.

This book in simple English
makes use of 15 pictures from Silkwood,
printed in black and white.

The writing in this book is so natural that the
reader may not see it as a
book for learners of English language,
at 700-word level.
Here are the opening lines:

It was dark. Nobody saw the accident. The small white car was found underneath the road there, and the car was lying next to the bridge wall. Inside the car was a dead woman. Her name was Karen Silkwood and she was twenty-eight years old. It was November 13th, 1974.

SSS, the group of Japanese who are reading books in simple English, say that the language level of this book is 2.6. It's 5,597 words long.

The books is The Death of Karen Silkwood by Joyce Hannam.
