The Big Picture
The Big Picture: Level 1 (Cambridge English Readers)
This story takes place in a
strange country named "Japan."
All the names of the
persons and places in the story
are in Japanese,
but reading it gives me a
strange feeling.

Some of my Japanese friends say that
the book is strange or unnatural.
Others say it's strange and interesting.

The book has 13 pictures in black and white,
and all the persons in them
have thin, sloping eyes,
[at all times,] sloping up to the sides.
And they have their talks in English.

The story is about a man who
goes by the name of Ken.
He is married to Sachiko
and they have a son.
But Ken is not living with them.

The man is good, however,
at taking pictures with his camera,
though it's strange that
he is dressed like a businessman.
He has a good chance one day
of taking a picture of Takahanada,
the noted sumo expert,
walking with his girlfriend.

And that is the start of troubles.
An angry Yakuza, a Japanese outlaw,
keeps on going after him.
Why is Ken in danger?
Will his picture make money?
What will be the future of his family?

SSS readers say that the reading level of the book is 1.4.
It's 4,218 words long.

The opening of the story goes like this:
It started with a telephone call. Just like any other day.

I'm Kenji, Kenji Harada. Everyone calls me Ken. I take photos. It's my job. I take photos for newspapers, for anybody who wants to buy them. I take photos of famous people. I have a Nikon camera and a darkroom in my flat. Sometimes work is good, sometimes it's bad.
