Cat and Neko
20060228_103064.jpg
If you are Japanese
you might have had some
surprise when you saw my
last post saying that
lions were cats.

I was not wrong.
It is all right to
say so
even in Normal English.
The word "cat" is a
bit different from the
Japanese word "neko."
A cat may be
small but it may be as
great as a mountain cat,
a cougar,
a cheetah,
a panther,
a jaguar,
a tiger or a lion.

A neko, on the other hand,
is a small one all the time
because there are no great cats
living naturally in Japan.
The only great sized cats here
are ones shipped from overseas and
living in animal gardens or
doing tricks inside of circles.

We may say however
that lions are of the
neko family or
relations of neko.
But they never go by the
name of "neko."
Different languages, different systems.
