This is a notebook and guide for learners of English as a second or overseas language, all over the earth. Most of the writings here are in Basic English, first designed by C. K. Ogden, using 850 necessary words and a number of international words only.

Cat and Neko
If you are Japanese you might have had some surprise when you saw my last post saying that lions were cats. 2006.02.27 Monday
Cat or Dog?
If you are interested in old Japan and go to places noted with their artworks, you will frequently see animals made of stone like the one in this picture. What are they? 2006.02.25 Saturday
Smoke or Cloud?
The air was very unclear this morning. We saw only the things which were near to us because of the white thing. 2006.02.24 Friday
A Picture from South
Japan is a small country. It is a surprisingly long way, however, from the north to the south, or from the south to the north. In this time of the year things are specially different. In the south the daytime heat is so much that it is pleasing to be in a T-shirt. In the north it is still necessary to be in an overcoat. 2006.02.22 Wednesday
One-Rail Train
The train which goes on one rail only is named "monorail." "Mono" is a Greek word for "one." Monorail generally goes on a very high railway like a very long bridge, over the town. 2006.02.19 Sunday
Chalk Line on the Blueboard
An airplane, up in the sky, sends heated air off its engines into the cold air outside. Because the air outside is very cold, white smoke of water and ice is formed. This picture was taken yesterday, about the time of sundown. "Blueboard" is a word which I have made up. It is like blackboard or chalk-board, but it is much greater, with a different color and up there. 2006.02.18 Saturday
3C4W
The change from winter to spring, in most part of Japan, takes place with a number of cold days, then warm days, and cold days again and warm days again, going the round over and over. Generally we have three cold days and four warm days. So there is an old Japanese saying which goes like this, "Three-cold four-warm." 2006.02.15 Wednesday
Can Is Hard to Make Use Of
Charles Kay Ogden's list of Basic words
doesn't have some fruequently used words like "can." This word is very frequently used in Normal English. It's more frequent in Normal English for everyday talk than for writing. But Ogden kept it out of the list. Why? 2006.02.13 Monday
Today's Picture
This was taken in 5 of February. A boy-like machine has a brush, acting as if he is putting paint on the ball in front of him. 2006.02.11 Saturday
How Ghibli Came to Make an Earthsea Picture
Toshio Suzuki, producer of the new animation based
on Le Guin's Earthsea books, gave a long talk to the Yomiuri Shimbun, the newspaper with the greatest number of readers in Japan. The talk in Japanese has been made public at Yomiuri Online, 26 December 2006. I have put an outline of the talk in Basic English. This is Part 1. |
