This is a notebook and guide for learners of English as a second or overseas language, all over the earth. Most of the writings here are in Basic English, first designed by C. K. Ogden, using 850 necessary words and a number of international words only.

Work and Play: A View of Richards and Plato
Reading English through Pictures 3, back in 1978, I came across a page where I. A. Richards put his opinion about work, play and learning, putting words in Greek into his English. After going through it, I probably had a change in my way of learning English. I made up my mind to take it as a sort of play. The writing is on the page 140. 2007.03.25 Sunday
VOA Special English
Basic English would be a good language for an
international radio program. Having it on the air was one of the suggestions put by Charles Kay Ogden, and in the late 1940's the United States government got the idea. It took, however, a number of years for them to have something less tightly controlled. And in the 1950's, they came up with a language, which is like a bridge between Basic and full English. The name of the radio station was "Voice of America." The program was "Special English." Please take note that "voice," "of," and "special" are all Basic words. 2007.03.17 Saturday
A Picture from Kyoto
I am now in Kyoto, meeting friends who are interested in GDM or Richards-Gibson system. This picture was taken in Kyoto Gosho, a great public garden which had the house of the family ruling Japan. It is warmer than Fukushima. 2007.03.10 Saturday
400-Year Old Army Base
This is the top of a mountain named Nakagusku Jo. It was used as a military station, back in about 1600. The mountain is full of walls and steps made of stones. It was probably like a town in the days of fighters and traders. Now it is a sort of public garden with an international agreement to keep it in good condition. 2007.03.02 Friday
A Strange Tree
Why are you so bent? Why do your branches go sideways? Was the wind from the river so hard that they became like that? |
